THE PARTICULARS OF ITS ORGANIZATIONS, FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University is a public funded State Agricultural University established, on the pattern of Land Grant System of education of USA in the year 1964, as institution to serve the people of Andhra Pradesh and the Country in accordance with an Act of the Legislature of Andhra Pradesh. The major mandates of the University are:
- Train human resources needed for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and allied sectors for the development of the State of Andhra Pradesh (Education).
- Constantly strive to generate technologies for improving production of crops and livestock, home science and allied sectors (Research).
- Assist in the process of transfer of technology through the dissemination of knowledge in collaboration with the development departments of the Government (Extension)
The University is rated as one of the top academic institution of the country and has won the covered BEST INSTITUTION AWARD of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research for the year 1999. In addition the University has also won the Best Performance Award of its students in the Nation Wide Common Entrance Examination conducted by ICAR for admission to postgraduate courses.
The University is accredited both by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry is accredited by the Veterinary Council of India. Hence, the degrees earned at the University are globally recognized.
The University serves its mandate through integrated programmes of instruction, research, extension and professional services.
Undergraduate and postgraduate education of exceptional quality is provided by the University covering a broad range of disciplines in Agriculture, Veterinary Science and Home Science. The principal goal of all undergraduate programmes is to enable the student, regardless of their major disciplines of study, to acquire basic knowledge and skills in their fields of study, an understanding of ethical and human values and an awareness of historical and contemporary foundations of knowledge and culture. Consistent with its mandate as a teaching and research institution, Master’s and Doctoral degree programmes offered by the University are directed towards development of professional, research and scholastic skills of the students.
As an integral part of its mandate, the University supports discovery and dissemination of new knowledge through its research programmes at 67 research stations, spread across the length and breath of the seven Agro-climatic zones of the State of Andhra Pradesh. The emphasis of these efforts is to evolve location-specific technologies relevant to the needs of the farmers and the agro and livestock based industries.
Through 22 of its District Agricultural Advisory and Technology Transfer Centres (DAATTCs), 10 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (Agricultural Science Centres) and the Extension Education Institute, the University provides support for the process of the Transfer of Technology to the line departments of the Government through front line extension efforts such as training of trainers, conduct of result demonstrations and publication of technical literature on various aspects of agriculture, livestock production, fisheries, horticulture and allied areas related to farming and rural development. The University also provides basic support for extension activities such as radio and interactive television broadcasts.
Powers and functions of the University
- To provide for instruction, training and research in agriculture.
- To provide for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in he field and extension in agriculture.
- To institute courses of study and to hold examinations for, and to confer, degrees, diplomas and other academic distinctions on persons who have pursued a course of study or carried on research in the University or in a institution recognized in the behalf by the University, as may be prescribed.
- To confer honorary degrees or other academic distinctions, as may be prescribed
- To create teaching, research and extension posts required by the University and to appoint qualified persons to such posts.
- To institute and award fellowships including travelling fellowships, studentships and prizes in accordance with the statues.
- To acquire, hold and dispose of property, and to contract and do all other things necessary for, or incidental to, the purposes of the University.
- To take over and maintain colleges relating to agriculture and hostels therefore.
- To borrow money from the Government of India, any State Government or any other agency.
- To establish and maintain the University colleges and hostels therefore.
- To fix, demand and receive such fees and other charges as may be prescribed.
- To provide such lectures and instructions for and to grant such diplomas to, field workers, and other persons, as the University may determine.
- To regulate the conduct of students, to maintain discipline among them and to make arrangements for promoting their health and welfare;
- To create administrative, ministerial and other necessary posts and to make appointments; thereto;
- To cooperate with other Universities and authorities in such manner and for such purposes, as the University may determine; and
- To do all such acts and things, as may be necessary for the furtherance of the objects of the University.
